Ultrasound technicians, also known as diagnostic medical sonographers or sonographers, produce internal images of human body tissues through the use of ultrasound high frequency sound waves. These images are then used by physicians to to diagnose and/or monitor many conditions.

Most associate ultrasound technician careers with sonograms performed during a pregnancy, but there are many other types of ultrasound technician jobs. In all fields, you will explain the procedure, gather the patient history, operate the machinery and process and analyze data collected before passing the information on to the doctor. Here are some ultrasound technicians careers to consider when determining if this field is right for you.

• Abdominal sonographers take images of the abdominal cavity. These images may then be used to treat a variety of conditions. The organs commonly captured by these images include the bile ducts, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, liver and kidneys.
• Cardiovascular sonographers are responsible for performing electrocardiograms or EKGs. In addition, a sonographer working in this field may take on basic x-ray and lab procedures or be asked to perform ambulatory monitoring and graded exercise diagnostic exams. Most in this field work in cardiology mobile units, hospitals, cardiologists’ offices or other facilities which provide health care.
• Mammographers are another of the ultrasound technician jobs you may wish to look into. This test is designed to help with breast cancer detection. In addition to looking for signs of cancer, a mammogram can detect blood supply issues, track tumors and help accurately biopsy breast tissue. High frequency transducers are used in this field and have been developed specifically for the purpose of studying breast tissue.
• Neurosonographers are trained to take images of the brain and other parts of the nervous system. Many work with premature infants and look for nervous system or neurological disorders associated with early birth. Blood vessels may also be scanned to look for abnormalities seen in infants suffering from sickle-cell anemia.
• Obstetric-Gynecological sonographers specialize in the female reproductive system. In addition to examining the fetus during pregnancy to ensure growth is occurring as expected, sonographers in this field may be asked to perform many other tests which look at the reproductive organs of the female body to determine if there are problems that need to be addressed.
